Abstract

The emergence of a multiplied and varied Yiddish book market in the second half of the nineteenth century was, among other things, a result of initiatives generated by writers, cultural activists, publishers, and printers. The main interest of these activists was to disseminate knowledge and widen the horizons of Jewish laypeople. With the passage of time, other considerations were added to these initiatives, and in the meantime, the variety of Yiddish books continued to proliferate. This article presents some of these initiatives, their initiators, and their practical results.
