Abstract

Some people opt for self-employment when they need to generate income but cannot find a job while others choose it to manifest their entrepreneurial spirit and be their own boss. In this chapter, we examine changes in people’s pattern of employment, from salaried employment to self-employment and vice versa, after retirement age. To carry out the inquiry, we utilised data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), considering changes in patterns of employment after official retirement ages with an ANOVA test and a multinomial regression model. The results reveal that few older employees switched from salaried employment to self-employment or the other way around, and for those who made such transitions this was largely explained by socio-demographic characteristics.
