The Syntactic Position of Prepositional Phrases in the Qur'ān

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

[Research literature has devoted a wide discussion to prepositions in Arabic. It seems, however that the question of the location of prepositional phrases in the sentence does not always receive the equal attention, thus, for example, in his discussion of the prepositions, Reckendorf admits that the issue of the prepositional phrases' positioning needs further investigation. This article attempts to answer this question, but only in regard to the Qur'ān. The article argues that there are three main factors that affect the word order of prepositional phrases in the Qur'ān: syntactic, stylistic and semantic. The article points out the fixed positions of the prepositional phrase due to grammatical rules or grammatical structure. Additionally, it shows the necessity of referring to the unique content and style of the Qur'ān for understanding the position of the prepositional phrase.]
