Abstract
Using tools of lower criticism and comparative method, this paper seeks to trace the original text of Sir 4:26-27. First reviewing the Hebrew, Greek, Syriac, and Latin versions of this passage, it then discusses parallel Near Eastern sources - in particular, the Akkadian Hear the Advice and Syriac Wisdom of Ahiqar prevalent in Syro-Levantine societies. The proverb's subsequent history in medieval Arabic and Jewish sources, attributed to the legendary wise man Luqmān and Ibn Gabirol, is also traced.
