Abstract

In this essay, I would like to focus on the mode of the Pythia’s functioning. I will begin with a short introduction on the Pythia’s role as an ecstatic medium or Apollo’s mouthpiece. Then I will dwell on my two main points, starting with the mechanism allowing these women to enter the state of prophetic engoddedness,
enthousiasmos, on set days. Finally, I will discuss the possible reasons for certain women of Delphi to be chosen to serve as prophetic priestesses.
