Abstract
This chapter is a review of the different ways in which the Roman Republic's political system and political culture have been interpreted since Ronald Syme published his The Roman Revolution in 1939. Syme's description of the Republic was-together with an earlier account by Matthias Gelzer in his Roman Nobility and Friedrich Munzer's theory of aristocratic 'parties'-hugely influential in shaping the oligarchic model of Roman politics in scholarship after the Second World War-English trans.
