The Kiss of the Pink Dolphin: Characterization of Recordings in the Ecuadorian Amazonian

Abstract

Amazonian river dolphin (pink dolphins) Inia geoffrensis are an endangered species whose environmental surrounding in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest is constantly in danger. To explore the abundance and abundance response of these this species, we set up a plan for the monitoring of this amazing species by means of long term passive acoustic recorders placed at multiple locations in the pink dolphins' habitat. In this paper, we outline the first step of this monitoring program: the characteristics of the pink dolphins' sounds, and the design of an automatic detector for their vocalization. Results are given for a small set of recordings obtained manually in multiple surveys performed in the Tipotini river set out in the Ecuadorian Amazonian region.
