The importance of spin and chirality in respiration

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding › Conference contribution › peer-review

Abstract

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a central process in life. These processes in chiral media are enhanced due to the CISS effect, as one electron spin passes through the chiral media enhancing the interaction with the triplets' oxides. However, spin thermal equilibrium and selection rules may limit the overall rate of ORR with time. Here we claim that the cofactor with large SOC exciting in many biological processes can act as a spin mixer preserving the rate of this important interaction.
