Abstract
We study the flow generated by periodic pitching of a 2D rigid plate about one of its ends in an unbounded domain of an (otherwise quiescent) incompressible fluid. Although it is well known that flow can be generated by flapping a plate, the generation of thrust is not well understood. This problem is addressed herein using numerical simulations of varying complexity and an analytical model based on the ideal fluid approximation. This model successfully predicts the impulse imparted to the fluid, and provides an insight into the physical mechanisms underlying the generation of thrust.
