Abstract
This chapter contrasts the remarkable scarcity of visual imagery during the Early Bronze Age of the southern Levant with the wealth of such imagery in the preceding period. It is proposed that this dramatic change was the result of deliberate social action, which testii es to a large-scale ideological reformation - from iconism to aniconism. It is further suggested that this reformation had long-term repercussions in the region.
