Abstract
The current chapter focuses on career development of Israeli Arab adolescents and young adults as a case study to address challenges and dilemmas faced by career counselors who work with minorities in multicultural societies. After describing the Israeli Arab context and the major issues facing Israeli Arab young adults through their career development, I propose three conceptual frameworks – career construction, psychology of a working theory and active citizenship – that can be used by career and guidance counselors. These concepts work on the intertwined relations between the individual and society, and emphasize the potential of active citizenship with regard to the practice of proactive behaviors as a means of fostering career development and empowering marginalized clients who are legal citizens. The chapter includes suggestions for training and examples.
