Abstract

Synesthesia is currently a 'hot topic' for research, some of which is relevant for an understanding of creativity. This article delves into the history of the area, and suggests reconsidering a Gestalt approach to both fields of inquiry. Synesthesia is discussed as part of a family of syncretic phenomena, implicated in creativity. The flourishing of research into synesthesia over the past decade has brought to the fore questions regarding the possible bidirectional nature of the phenomenon. The notion that synesthesia involves hyperconnectivity in the brain, itself implicating bidirectionality, has been suggested as a plausible basis for creativity.
