Surface optomechanics: Calculating optically excited acoustical whispering gallery modes in microspheres

Abstract

We numerically calculate mechanical whispering-gallery modes in a micron-scale silica sphere revealing Rayleigh, transverse, and longitudinal deformations. Experimentally observed modes vibrating at frequencies from 50MHz to 12 GHz will be shown next to their calculated mode.
