Abstract

This chapter analyzes state-religious education (SRE) in Israel, a faith-based school system. SRE is an ideological education system whose aim is to enhance religious-Zionist ideology through the curriculum, school climate, and the ideological orientation of the teachers who are its agents. SRE schools socialize their students to this specific ideology. The chapter presents a chronological diachronic historical description of SRE followed by a socio-historical synchronic analysis of the SRE in relation to the development of the religious-Zionist movement. SRE policy and organizational structure are analyzed and the major dilemmas and main achievements of the SRE are described.
