Stability analysis of the flow fields of forced and unforced cylinders in crossflow

Abstract

This paper discusses a Linear Stability Analysis (LSA) of measured Particle Image Ve locimetry (PIV) experimental data. Flow control by means of an array of wall jets, with a fixed spanwise spacing, is applied to a circular cylinder in crossflow. The fluidic oscillators utilize the Coandă effect and delay separation, thus increasing lift and alleviating drag. The measured mean velocity profiles on the cylinder are analyzed theoretically by means of Linear Stability Theory (LST) and Parabolized Stability Equations (PSE). The theoretical analysis reveals the dominant frequencies and spanwise wavenumbers and serves as a guidance for the experimental campaign.
