Abstract

How can a diverse society, with various groups holding different and incompatible moral, political and religious convictions, live together without oppression? This is the fundamental question that animates Sovereignty Across Generations. It is the fundamental challenge posed by Rawls at the opening of Political Liberalism:How is it possible for there to exist over time a just and stable society of free and equal citizens, who remain profoundly divided by reasonable religious, philosophical, and moral doctrines?
