SMARTerials for high performance buildings

Abstract

The dynamic nature of the environment has led to the need for adaptive solutions for which the architect must possess a set of tools in order to cope, not just with extreme situations (such as midsummers, frigid winters and more), but also with a wide range of interim climactic conditions. This paper will present the significance of new advanced material exploration, with an emphasis on smart materials, and the complementary application of technology to achieve high performance buildings and sustainable design. A new digital tool for smart materials classification and selection for architects and designers will be presented. The application of the tool will be shown through a case study with an emphasis on building facades that react to specific climatic conditions (such as temperature change or solar radiation).
