Abstract
The recent developments in the study of silyl radicals have been spectacular. Two decades ago only short-lived silyl radicals were known and only a few were spectroscopically characterized. Since then many new types of persistent and stable silyl radicals have been synthesized, isolated, and characterized spectroscopically, including by X-ray crystallography. These exciting developments are reviewed in this manuscript. The isolation of stable silyl radicals, silicon-centered anion-radicals and biradicals opens new opportunities for their application as new materials with unique chemical, photophysical, and magnetic properties. The review consists of nine sections: (1) Introduction; (2) Fundamentals of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectros (3) Silyl radicals-General introduction; (4) Silyl substituted silyl radicals; (5) Tris(silyl)-substituted silyl radicals; (6) Silicon centered Bi- and Tri-radicals; (7) Silicon centered anion-radicals; (8) Transition metal substituted silyl radicals; (9) Conclusions.
