Abstract
With the advance of hardware systems and communication technologies, the design of self-controlled submerged devices and their connection in an Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT) is becoming possible. Deployed over long periods of times, these devices can only dedicate a small portion of their energy to underwater acoustic (UWA) communication. As a result, the communication packets should be extremely small with minimum overhead for preamble signals and pilot symbols. On the other hand, the operation of the IoUT in shallow water requires good equalization performance to manage the expected long intersymbol interference (ISI). In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to allow equalization albeit the short training sequence versus long UWA channel. Our approach relies on the generalized Gaussian message passing (GAMP) scheme to operate a novel semiblind equalization. Specifically, we formulate the joint channel estimation and decoding (JCED) problem as a factor graph and perform equalization by passing messages within units of a turbo equalizer. Extensive numerical simulation and results from a field experiment show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art benchmarks in terms of the communication system's capability to perform well with a small number of pilot symbols.
