Rabbinic Responsa from Medieval England: Towards a Complete Edition

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

The literature produced by Jews living in medieval England has suffered from almost complete neglect in contemporary scholarship. With the exception of the Hebrew texts published by Joseph Jacobs in 1893, misidentified and mistranslated, this entire corpus has escaped the notice of scholars working on the history of English Jewry. Within the confines of Jewish textual scholarship, which has made great strides in the study of medieval French and German rabbinic literature, England has likewise remained almost untouched. I am presently working on a project that aims to locate, transcribe, annotate and translate into English all of the surviving responsa and other rabbinic writings from medieval England. At the IMC I will present a sample of the new findings emerging from this project, which will fundamentally change the scholarly understanding of the Jewish community that existed in England during the Middle Ages.
