Abstract
The purpose of this article is to trace the relationship between the synagogue and the house of study (Beth Hamidrash) during the Mishnah and Talmud period in Roman Palestine. Were they the same institution or two separate ones? Scholars are divided on this question. This question reopens the debate concerning the place of a "synagogal Judaism", competing with rabbinic Judaism, which might have led to the creation of a rabbinic institution, such as the Beth Ha-Midrash, which would then have stood out from the non-rabbinic synagogal milieu.
