Prolegomena to any future edition of aristotle’s prior analytics: Theodore’s arabic translation

No critical edition of Aristotle’s Prior Analytics takes into account the evidence of Theodore’s Arabic translation. The 1964 Oxford Classical Text edition, while dismissing its value, attributes it to a Theodore who did not translate it, in a century in which he did not live. Arabists have since uncovered the identity of Theodore the translator, which has consequences for its philological value, in which Arabists have understandably not taken an interest. This article demonstrates its importance, establishes the methodological basis for its study as a witness of the Greek, and provides a sample of the readings it offers.
