Abstract

The network of nano- and mesoscale friction researchers is expanding over a period of time this special section of the Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter highlights some of the work developed in this community. The collective dynamics of an ensemble of macroscopic grains under shear are investigated in this special section. Possible relations to lubrication of systems at smaller scales are raised.
