Abstract
We discuss the modeling of the performance of modern polarization- multiplexed communications systems in the presence of polarization dependent loss (PDL) and polarizationmode dispersion (PMD). Ways of assessing system tolerance to PDL and methods for increasing this tolerance are discussed.
