Abstract
In France, the tension between linguistic change and language norms has caused recurring lengthy debates. Three essential arguments are habitually put forward: the importance of language as a monument of its history; the preservation of proximity between languages of the same family; and a desire to maintain the written language as a reliable reflection of the spoken one. The complex cultural relationships between the agents and institutions involved in language reforms are discussed.
