Abstract

Recent years have witnessed a change in Israeli discourse with regard to party patronage and political appointments. Political appointments have been described as a threat to Israeli society, 2 and have become synonymous with political corruption (Goldberg, 2004: 3). In addition, for the first time in Israel, a former minister is standing trial for his involvement in political appointments.3 This chapter aims to clarify the influence of patronage on the current political discourse, and to examine the extent to which patronage influenced the 2006 elections.
