Online Self-presentation: Examining Gender Differences in Academic Scholars’ Personal Web-pages

Abstract

Since the emergence of the digital age, professionals have utilized online platforms and apps to promote their occupational self- branding. In this study, we analyzed academic scholars’ usage of university- issued web-pages for self-presentation and examined gender-based differ- ences in these websites. First, we found a gender asymmetry in favor of males in online presence across all academic ranks. Second, in contrast to previous research, we discovered that females included their published research more often than their male peers. Additionally, our results repli- cated females’ tendency to be more expressive and wordier in detailing their research work and identified females’ tendency to use third-person singular pronouns and males’ tendency to use first-person plural pro- nouns
