Abstract

We review the modelling of nonlinear interference in wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) fibre-optic systems. In particular, we focus on the analysis of inter-channel nonlinear interference noise, to which we refer as NLIN. We discuss the derivation of the variance and elaborate on the properties of NLIN in terms of its temporal correlations, the extent to which it manifests itself as nonlinear phase-noise, its dependence on modulation format, etc.
