Abstract

This article argues that new perspectives on Homer and a sympathetic treatment of the exegetical tradition can contribute to improving the text of the exegetical scholia to the Iliad. Our first example offers a new reading of Schol. bT Il. 22.79; the second addresses a textual problem in Schol. bT Il. 22.318 c; the third explains a crux in Schol. T Il. 23.21 a. Taken together, our three examples show that textual criticism and interpretive scholarship aimed at understanding ancient critical interests benefit from close dialogue.
