Network Modeling of Tissues and Cell Types

Abstract

All cellular processes, from cell growth and proliferation to metabolism and cell death, involve biochemical interactions among genes, proteins, RNA, metabolites, and other molecules. In specific cellular contexts, such as within a cellular compartment, cell type, or tissue, certain molecular interactions occur whereas other interactions are avoided, resulting in distinct cellular processes, functions and phenotypes. Network concepts, algorithms and tools allow for modeling and predicting how the molecular interactions combine into cellular processes in distinct contexts. This article presents network approaches and their application to the modeling of tissues and cell types, with particular emphasis on modeling human tissues.
