Abstract
Since their discovery in 2011, MXenes are extensively studied as materials for electrochemical energy storage systems. The high electric conductivity, 2D structure, enabling ions insertion, and excellent chemical stability make MXenes an attractive choice for energy storage applications. This review is focused on the utilization of MXenes in aqueous electrolyte solutions, as cost-effective and safe medium. This review describes the compatibility and electrochemical performance of MXenes as electrodes for charge storage devices. We present their composition with capacitive compounds or redox-active materials such as nano-carbons, metal-oxides, and conducting polymers. Other applications of MXenes as complementary components in energy devices including current collectors, separators, and binders are presented as well. Finally, we discuss the challenges and limitations of MXenes compounds and propose a perspective for their future development.
