Efforts to construct the new generation of computers had become a top priority at the Weizmann Institute as it was felt that the computing power WEIZAC had started to become a limitation. At the same time, plans for creating a department of pure mathematics started to be debated. Pekeris opposed the move, but the department of pure mathematics became fully operative in 1971.",
