Abstract
In the introduction to Nikki Usher's illuminating and absorbing ethnography of news production at The New York Times, there is a joke that any discussion about the future of journalism should follow two rules: “First, all discussions about it must reference The New York Times. Second, anyone invested in the larger project of changing journalism ought to stop with The New York Times obsession”(p. 7). This paradoxical, self-reflexive humor
highlights the inevitability of a scholarly focus on the paragon of Western journalism.
