Jewish-Arab bilingual education in Israel

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter offers a holistic overview of the Jewish-Arab schools as an educational model, including the pedagogy and curriculum development. I present the central educational models and approaches
that shaped the development of the schools and propose that, despite the
uncoordinated entanglement of influences, a unique, model of Jewish-Arab
education can be identified. I contend that the hybridity in the types of programs that evolved is due to the variance in the fields of knowledge and
approaches that influenced the schools’ founders and developers. None of the
Jewish-Arab schools was constructed on an existing educational model – bilingual or otherwise. However, notwithstanding the variance, all were founded
on an ideological vision of shared education in Arabic and Hebrew for Jewish and Arab children, and all self-define as bilingual education. In addition,
and significantly, all the schools share a similar integration of three primary
educational approaches and implement similar key strategies and practices in
developing their curricula and pedagogy
