Abstract

The period 1948-1973 tells the story of the rise and fall of the alliance between France and Israel. In 1948, such an alliance seemed unimaginable for multiple reasons. It was the rebellion in Algeria and the growing tension that ensued between France and the Arab states that ignited the Franco-Israeli close cooperation. The Suez campaign also played a fundamental role in strengthening the Franco-Israeli honeymoon. The establishment of the Fifth Republic altered the form but not the content of the relationship. However, the Franco-Soviet entente and the Six Day War, changed France’s s policy vis-à-vis Israel.
