Abstract

Hamlet was first fully translated into Hebrew in 1900 by H. J. Bornstein, in Poland. It appeared then in serial in the Jewish newspaper Ha-Zefirah, and was published in 1926 in Warsaw. In his afterword, Bronstein describes his turn to the Bible (Old Testament) and other Jewish sources, such as the Talmud, in order to find Hebrew equivalences for Shakespeare’s poetry (cf. Shakespeare 1926, 201).
