Abstract
The Caucasus is a large mountainous area covering about 440,000 km2 between the Black, Azov and Caspian Seas (Fig. 1.1). The mountains are more than 1,000 km long, in a WNW-ESE striking range between the Caspian and Black Seas and reach elevations of over 5 km above sea level.
