Abstract

We present a fully analytic study of the nonlinear interference noise (NLIN) in SDM systems. Our approach is based on the generalization to the case of mode-multiplexed systems of tools that have been recently developed for the study of the NLIN in standard single-mode systems. The presented model is shown to yield simple expressions relating the NLIN power and the information capacity to the number of propagating modes.
