Abstract
This study compares the commentary method of Rabbeinu Perez, a student of the yeshivot in Évreux and Paris, with the scholastic norms current at the Paris University and the other Christian academies during the thirteenth century. Using several examples, we show how R. Perez was influenced by the scholastic rules in Proprietates terminorum and how he analyzed the precise meaning of Talmudic terms to discover intentions which are not explicit in the text, but derive from it through logical deduction. Following the accepted practice of students of scholasticism, R. Perez raises and then refutes a number of interpretations, finally choosing the most acceptable and logical proposition.
