Abstract

Engineering vascular tissue is one of the primary challenges of regenerative medicine, for which hydrogels represent a fundamental and extremely useful set of tools. Understanding the specifi c requirements necessary for a hydrogel to support vascular development is crucial for the development of new approaches in tissue engineering. This chapter reviews the various hydrogels used to address this challenge, as well as basic principles of new blood vessel network formation and recent developments in hydrogel applications for vascular tissue engineering.
