Abstract

Researchers working on the Natufian culture highlighted the high variability of Natufian sites in the Levant. Large and probably sedentary hamlets, containing stone architecture, numerous burials and huge quantities of finds, occur mostly in the ‘core area’ of the Mediterranean central Levant (e.g., Bar-Yosef 1991; Belfer-Cohen 1988; Edwards 1991; Garrod and Bate 1937; Perrot 1966; Vallaet al.1991, 2007; Weinstein-Evronet al.herein). Smaller and more ephemeral occupations, sometimes exhibiting evidence of specialized activities such as numerous burials or rock-cut installations but little or no architecture, occur in the ‘core area’ as well as the neighboring areas.
