Abstract

It is commonly believed that a good night's sleep is paramount to good health. Nevertheless, in modern society we spend less time sleeping. No less important, the quality of our sleep is interrupted by environmental factors such as noise and light pollution. Here, we focus on the functional outcomes of a major form of sleep disruption, sleep fragmentation. The fragmentation of sleep frequently accompanies various physiological conditions such as sleep apnea, depression, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, pregnancy, and aging. We will address the impact of sleep fragmentation on cognitive functions and memory consolidation.
