Abstract
Choosing the right animal model.
The authors present a physiological and metabolic comparison between the standard laboratory mouse and the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber). The naked mole-rat is a subterranean eusocial rodent, living in underground borrows where severe hypoxic and anoxic conditions are common (the conditions in its underground burrows can reach the levels of 10% CO2 and 6% O2). Under these unique extreme conditions, this mammal has evolved several extraordinary behavioral and physiological features, making it a fascinating research model {1}.
