Exposing School Students to Nanoscience

Abstract

This chapter presents different nanoscale science and technology (NST) programs that were developed for high school students. The motivation to teach NST for school students is a question that often arises in academic science education circles. The programs that were included were ranked according to their main nanoscience concepts. Students should be taught about the properties of materials and should be allowed to identify and characterize them. They tend to think that if a property changes it means that one material was replaced by another. The nanoscale challenges this understanding by exposing people to properties that are size dependent as well. The concept of size-dependent properties includes four sub-concepts. The effect of the concept size-dependent properties led to the creation of new properties of known elements and materials. Educational researchers in Mexico showed that this concept can be approached successfully with a simple experiment and a very relevant topic.
