Abstract
(Neuron, 45, 513–523; February 17, 2005) We, the editors of Neuron, wish to address two issues that have been brought to our attention by the authors regarding this paper. Firstly, Figure 1F depicts a northern blot image in which lanes appear to be spliced. The authors provided us with one of the original blots to review, and we understand that the splicing was carried out to eliminate intervening space, a practice common at the time prior to the journal adopting specific guidelines for figure preparation. Secondly, Figures 2J and 3H depict graphs in which some of the error bars appear to be potentially identical. Partially owing to the time elapsed since publication, the authors were unable to locate the files containing the data represented in these figures; hence, we are unable to provide a conclusive commentary on the apparent similarity of the error bars. Of note, standards at the time of publication did not suggest displaying individual values in bar graphs, contrary to current reporting standards that allow for a better visualization and evaluation of the robustness of the data. Considering that the first issue followed scientific standards at the time of publication and does not affect the conclusions of the study and that we are unable to definitively resolve the second issue regarding potential similarity of the error bars—owing to an inability to recover data from nearly two decades ago—we have decided not to pursue any corrective actions. However, we deem it important to bring these issues to the attention of our readers for transparency and to uphold the integrity of the scholarly record.
