Abstract
Passively crowdsourced social media act as an opportunistic source of behavioural data for ecosystem services analysis. Public geotagged photographs, for instance, represent a unique form of revealed preference data, available at wide scales and low cost. In this chapter, the authors use online geotagged photographs from Flickr to evaluate and map recreation to the wetlands of Kerala State, India. Photographs’ metadata are used to: (1) estimate the most visited wetlands; (2) uncover patterns of recreational use across different wetlands types; (3) investigate the relationship between visitation and various wetland and site-specific attributes such as area and water quality, though regression analysis; and (4) test scenarios of wetland improvement and their potential to impact visitation to five coastal wetlands presently suffering from poor water quality.
