Abstract

We present an all-metallic device demonstrating perfect retroreflection for both transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarized plane waves. To this end, we utilize a mode-matching-based analytical formalism for the analysis and synthesis of a grating composed of periodic rectangular grooves in a metal slab. Following the spirit of recent work on metagratings (MGs), we formulate a set of analytical constraints tying the desired functionality with the geometry of the structure, facilitating the dual-polarized retroreflection by resolution of two degrees of freedom: the depth and the lateral dimension of the grooves. The analytical design is verified by full-wave simulations, paving the path for the development of versatile all-metallic MGs, suitable for high operating frequencies and spaceborne systems.
