Disadvantaged but not dissatisfied: How agency ameliorates negative reactions to unequal pay

Abstract

Managers waste resources that cannot be allocated equally between workers. We explore a procedure designed to reduce such waste by empowering workers with the agency to decide on pay. We find that a sense of agency reduces workers’ dissatisfaction with others’ better outcomes.
