Abstract
This chapter focuses on an excursus of Abraham Aben Esra in his commentary on Kohelet 5,1, one of the few critical remarks on literary style in medieval Hebrew liturgical poetry at hand for modern research. The intense creative
tradition of writing Hebrew liturgical poetry developed as a literary tradition step
by step in different ways in different parts of the Jewish Diaspora. Thus Abraham
Aben Esraʼs critical remarks on the liturgical tradition of Rome, far from criticizing the use of Hebrew liturgical poetry as such, constitute a critical review of one
tradition in the light of another. This challenged him to pinpoint the aesthetical
principles of his own tradition as never done before.
