Abstract

This book makes both empirical and theoretical contributions to the literature on social support for young people in residential care. Social support is widely recognized as a protective factor for mental health, especially for those who have experienced adversity and risk (Attar-Schwartz & Fridman-Teutsch, 2018; Magalhães & Calheiros, 2017). Children and young people in residential care are particularly vulnerable due to histories of abuse and neglect, ongoing mental health challenges (Magalhães & Camilo, 2023), and the difficulties associated with living in institutional settings and transitioning out of the system. Ensuring supportive, secure relationships during and after care is therefore essential.
